Fun Activities to Do With Kids

Make a Cupcake Tower
Our favorite technique is to call it a “Cupcake Mountain” for kids. Each kid gets a cupcake, and the “mountain” elicits squeals of excitement when it appears, frosted, decorated with candy and colored sprinkles, and topped with blazing candles. Begin with 7 cupcakes arranged in a circle on the bottom. Scatter this layer with M&Ms. Then add a tier of 4, then 3, then 1. Scatter M&Ms and sprinkles to decorate. When serving, keep a knife handy to respread any frosting that sticks to the bottom of the liners.

Navigate Using the Big Dipper
Did you know the Big Dipper is not a constellation? It’s an asterism (a familiar group of stars located within a constellation). Look for seven major stars: four in the “bowl” and three in the “handle.” The two stars outside the bowl are called the “pointer” stars. They point to Polaris, a bright star that is also called the North Star because, with it, you can figure out which way is north.
To find north:
Find the Big Dipper.Find the pointer stars.Find Polaris.Look straight up.Turn your body towards Polaris. Now, you’re facing north.

Build Garden Art
Make garden stepping stones, build bat- and birdhouses, make a sundial, assemble a weather station and use it to keep track of the weather in your backyard, start a compost pile, tap some maple trees and try your hand at making syrup, and don’t forget to make some mud pies.
